Why has Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s Wedding become so controversial?

1. The Age Gap:

When people noticed that Priyanka Chopra is older to Nick Jonas by around 10 years, the judgment was passed. Comments spurred up on social media talking about Priyanka Chopra being a “Gold-digger” and that they could be “Mother and Son.”

Let’s break it down, shall we? Firstly, by the most ignorant comment that is seen consistently around the relationship. Priyanka and Nick have a 10 year age gap, usually in the relationship that age gap is alright. Obviously, that is if the man is older, because we live in a misogynistic world where women can’t be more than, even by age. Secondly, how could they be “mother and son” are people really implying that women give birth at the age of 10? That comment is not only ignorant but absolutely redundant.

How about the Gold Digger comments? Or as a platform recently called her out to be doing the whole thing for publicity? Priyanka Chopra is a world-renowned actress, singer, businesswoman, investor, philanthropist, former Miss World, and badass. She has an approximate net worth of 11 million dollars. Why in the world would a beautiful, self-made, strong woman get married for publicity when she is getting enough of it just by working hard in the fields she thrives in? Is it because the world is too scared to accept that a strong woman can just be in love and wants to use her money in an extravagant wedding? Maybe the world just isn’t used to women in power, we sure know that Nick Jonas is. Go Jonas!

2. The Race

A lot of people have been quick to judge Priyanka Chopra because of her race. Although, she hasn’t responded and neither do we believe she will respond to such comments. Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s wedding proved that the world is full of racist people who live in the shadows and come out in the online world when their xenophobia becomes hard to handle.

Comments such as “She is marrying him for the citizenship” were made which only further reflect that xenophobia of many people across the globe. Truth be told, Priyanka Chopra is a very proud woman of Indian origins. She loves her culture, religion, and her people. There is a reason she is currently investing in a dating app. It will support women in India to make their own love choices. Priyanka has never denied the racism she faces for being brown, and the fact that she will continue to stand with other WOC. Therefore, we don’t even see a reason to mention citizenship.

Moreover, people calling out Nick and comparing him with a stereotype of the straight white men is also racist and sexist. Nick Jonas chose to marry a strong woman and he is getting negativity for a choice he made? For the love he chose? This form of racism should also be emphasized upon, interracial marriages are beautiful and Nick is trying his best to understand the Indian culture. Therefore, the racism that both these celebrities are facing is disgusting, because all they are truly doing is being happy and in love.

3. Sexism

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s wedding demonstrated a lot of sexism. Mainly, because Priyanka Chopra is a woman of high stature and has great power. People are just not used to a WOC getting the same amount of media coverage a typical white male celebrity would encounter. A recent publication called out Priyanka for her extravagant wedding. If this money was spent by a man, people would simply suggest that it is in their nature.

Priyanka Chopra is an inspiration to many WOC around the globe. She is a self-made international sensation. Priyanka comes from a simple, middle-class family of working parents. She has made it to the top of Bollywood and Hollywood because of her hard work and dedication. Why would a woman who has worked 20 years to get where she does not spend her money on the one event that would possibly be one of the most important ones in her whole life?

Priyanka Chopra is a badass, she has just been named one of the 100 most powerful women in the world by Forbes, for the second time in a row. She is literally an inspiration.

4. Lack of education and knowledge

This point falls a bit on the end of the racist remarks. There are many people who simply fail to comprehend the Indian wedding traditions and made no effort in educating themselves on it. Indian weddings, even those in smaller and poorer households are extremely extravagant. Different religions in India celebrate different forms of weddings. However, they all last for a couple of days and have a lot of traditions.

Everyone wants to come and see India as the “exotic” land of the world. Yet, no one wants to take the time to educate themselves on the deep culture that is rooted in this country. India is not perfect, no nation is, but the culture here that has been untouched through centuries. Just search “Indian wedding” on YouTube and you will find MANY weddings that were just as extravagant as Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s wedding. The only difference is these people are celebrities, so the whole world sees what they are doing.

5. The pain of people coming out as hate in Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s wedding

We live in a world where everyone is suffering some sort of pain. But most people find it easier to simply throw that pain out into the world and cause hate and devastation. The truth is, a happy person, someone who is in sync with their inner self will never take the time to cause negativity. A person who is content with life and knows of healing understands that the negativity one spreads is just a reflection of who one is and only affect one’s own life.

Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s wedding showed that a lot of people in the world are in pain. They are suffering from a lack of love or lack of ambition or lack of recognition. Battling their own demons. Here is a note to people who hate online: you are only hurting yourself. Take some time to introspect and look at your actions. Find out where your anger originates from and work on becoming better human beings. You are better than this, and even though the racist, sexist, and horrific remarks made, we understand you are just human and make mistakes, we forgive you even if you haven’t yet apologized. Take this opportunity to learn about yourself, take it as an opportunity for healing and growth.

But the beautiful reality is: We can make it better, together.
